Mejia never got shot at 5th spot

published by Keith Gendron march 14, 2014

Many of us thought after last years small sample of appearances from Jenrry Mejia, that he would have the inside track at being the Mets number 5 starter for 2014. But, after the signing of Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league deal that “competition” became a null and void idea. From what I have read is that like Jason deGrom was sent to minor league camp today, Mejia inevitably will be sent to Vegas as a part of their rotation. Mejia has pitched only 2 innings against the Nats thus far and if he is healthy, maybe he can be inserted in the rotation earlier if Jon Niese proves unprepared to start the regular season due to his shoulder/velocity issue. Its all about semantics, as the Mets still have the option to send Mejia down and the same does not apply to Matsuzaka.
